Ten best things about being a mom

by , posted on September 23rd, 2010 in Mama Kat's Writing Workshop

I wanted to do the “Ten Best Things about my Job” prompt from Mama Kat’s writing workshop.

But then I realized. I don’t have a job.

Yeah, yeah, I know. I’m a mom. Toughest job in the world. Toughest job you’ll ever love. Hardest working women in show business. Wait, that’s MC Hammer. Not that he’s a woman. He was the hardest working MAN in show business. U Can’t Touch This. Remember that song? Is it bad that I still heart it? Is it now in your head? Doo doo doo doo, doo, doo U CAN’T TOUCH THIS!

Just the other day my twin, Gigi from Kludgy Mom, wrote a somewhat controversial post on mediocre blogs that caused quite a little stir. And after the above paragraph? I’m not sure she wasn’t pointing her knowledgable figure directly at my Mommypants.

So I will list my 10 favorite things about being a mom. And then I want you all to post some of yours.

Because if you don’t? It’ll be HAMMERTIME, people! Don’t force me to post a video of me dancing. Cause I’ll do it and your retinas will NEVER be the same!

10. I have an excuse for my backfat and saggy boobs.

9. I REALLY appreciate alone time.

8. I always have someone, other than the dogs, who is happy to see me.

7. Early-morning snuggles with small bodies still warm with sleep.

6. When I see my kids be kind to another child I feel like maybe I’m doing some things a little bit okay.

5. Sometimes I say “yes” and my heart of stone actually melts a little.

4. Watching the pride on their faces when they conquer: a fear, a tough reading word, a soccer goal, the stairs, a foot race, using a spoon.

3. Getting warm, sticky hugs and hearing “I love you, Mommy.” Without giving them a new toy or ice cream first.

2. Doling out kisses on boo-boos and seeing that they do, in fact, make it all better.

1. Discovering that love and heartache and laughter and tears have no absolutely no limits and somedays I experience them all within a single moment.

Now it’s your turn!

I definitely agree about the backfat. It’s the gift my children gave me that keeps on giving. But I gave birth–twice–so I have backfat cred!

And thanks for the shout out! I got a few clickovers from you!!!

P.S. you’re hardly mediocre. That’d be like calling myself mediocre. Sheesh.

I have to check out Gigi’s blog, because my blog can be mediocre at times (hey, not all posts are home runs! Actually, very few are. Excuse me as I wipe the tears off my keyboard before I short circuit it).

One item for my list is that I’ve EARNED every damn gray hair and wrinkle!

Two things first: I want to see the dancing, and Gigi’s post on mediocre blogging was awesome.

Okay, as for being a parent, I love seeing their personalities grow every day. I love to see Aja’s determination and Jocelyn’s two-year-old humor. I love to see them play together. I love that despite having been told I lack the compassion gene, that my girls will in fact be compassionate. And yeah, my boobs look different than before (not in a good way) but it as SO worth it.

    Cheryl Reply:

You have a great list! Wait – you lack the compassion gene? I highly doubt that, sister!

new kid here – hi! not sure why i never clicked over, we have a lot of mutual friends.
thing i love most about being a mom? i can use the heathens as an excuse to be a total bitch [can i swear here? sorry]. So here’s an example. we’re in line at a store and someone cuts and I get to say – to my kids – loudly – “Oh, boys, do you think cutting in line is nice? Is it kind? No, it’s not, let’s move up a little bit!” Yah, stuff like that. They’re my little minions.

    Cheryl Reply:

Yes, you may swear here. I’ve been known to drop an eff bomb occasionally. And that excuse? BRILLIANCE! Glad you came by!

You totally missed THE best thing about being a mom.

    COOKIES.

You CAN’T be a good mom without a regular supply of cookies for yourself.

    I mean THE KIDS.

Of COURSE I meant the KIDS.

    The KIDS need cookies.

Cause, motherhood…damnit…I mean CHILDHOOD depends on cookies.

Where are my damned orange milanos?
