Finally, The Hunger Games

The Hunger GamesI stand corrected.

Actually, I’m sitting, because I’m typing, but you know what I’m saying.

I just spent the past few hours reading The Hunger Games. Just to backtrack for a moment, I’d had absolutely no desire to read it. I’m not a fan of stories about dystopian societies with a little steampunk thrown in for good measure. Give me a good coming-of-age tale, a la Judy Blume, and I’m all for it. But a hero named Katniss? Meh.

Also? I was scarred – SCARRED – from reading the Twilight series, which was neither well-written nor entertaining, especially because I couldn’t get over a 150 year-old man pursuing a, what, 16 year-old girl or however old she was, who could only be beautiful if she gave up her life for him.

Ick. Not a lesson I’d even teach my daughter.

The final book was so painful I had to talk myself through it like I do the final few miles of a marathon. And then I couldn’t get any of those hours back I wasted reading it.

So I refused to buy The Hunger Games. Just figured it’d be another huge cultural phenomenon I’d miss. But then I discovered my neighbor had the book, and when her daughter wanted to read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which I own, we swapped books.

I liked The Hunger Games. I did. The pace was great, the story engaging. The characters, if not deep, were complex enough. I almost forgot I was reading YA fiction. The book was fun. And so smart of the writer, to make it a trilogy.

Speaking of which. Am I dying to read the next two?

No.

But I totally would.

If someone wanted to loan me a copy.
