Puppy love

puppy with blue eyes

Sunday, I took Sawyer with me to the shelter. There were some new dogs and we wanted to be the first ones there to get a look at them. And this is who we found.

We called home and David packed up Sage and Xander and they came down to take a look. The little guy was tough to resist. All brown and fuzzy with amazing blue-green eyes. And? Puppy breath.

We all fell in love. And Tuesday afternoon, he came home.┬áRight now, as I type, he’s fast asleep in my lap. I know it’s going to be a very long night. But they’re only babies for a short time, right?

His name is Welker, after New England Patriots receiver Wes Welker. Who also happens to have blue eyes. Welker (the dog) is a true mutt. His mother, who gave birth at the shelter, is a mix of maybe lab and shepherd and who knows what else. He will eventually fit in well with our other mutt, Gable. Right now Gable is teaching him that if he jumps in Gable’s face, Gable will bark at him. Welker gets the message. For at least five minutes.

So basically Welker has the attention span of my kids. He fits in perfectly.

Oh, how I’d love to have a puppy. My husband pulls that “I’ma die” nonsense just because his eyes swell shut, his throat gets itchy, he sneezes incessantly, and he breaks out in hives. Baby. Take one for the team and pop some Claritin, Primatene Mist, Benadryl, and two inhaler puffs like you do to cut the grass, sheesh!

Welker is gorgeous. I love his eyes and he looks like he’s a cuddler. I wanna puppy cuddle.

Welker is adorable! I’m so happy you found a little sweetie. I wonder if he’ll exhaust the kids or the kids will exhaust him? Enjoy!

Head shape says Pit to me, no? I would have a very hard time saying no to him. (story of my life, don’t get me started).
Gorgeous and yes, they are only babies for a short while.

On a similar note: hold me: TheDude has learned to climb stairs and boxes and out of the tub and OMG make it stop!

And yes, I realize I’ve become one of those mothers that must share a story about her baby when she hears stories of other women’s babies, human or not.

If he’s a lab, he’ll lose those blue-green eyes and they’ll become brown as he grows up, unfortunately! But he’s a cutie. Enjoy!

What a honey boy! Gable will raise him right and Welker will be a great friend to humans and dogs alike. I’m so happy for y’all. He seems like a great addition to your family AND you’ve helped a shelter dog, just like you wanted to. Keep us posted on this sweetie.
