Mommypants Moment: …and it was wonderful

by , posted on November 22nd, 2010 in Mommypants Moment

The worst thing that happened to the blogger world was when Nicole of The Mombshelter went back to work, shaping young minds, after her year’s maternity leave was up (blame Canada!). Because she doesn’t post as much as she used to, and I miss her amazing writing, which makes me laugh as often as it makes me cry. Mostly, I just miss my friend. I’m so glad she’s here today.

I feel the need to take them off or at least loosen my belt a notch.

As if that would relieve the imposing feelings of constriction.

Of breathlessness.

They’re too tight. Against the bloat of decision and duty and responsibility.

The guilt.

Weighing upon me and settling at my middle, which seems to be the way with most things. Carrying it at my waist. The well worn spot on my hip, that has known no vacancies for some time now.

Its the everythings, the unyielding weekday schedule, the brisk voices, the rush out the door, the reminding, the telling, the lost patience, the struggle.

With everything.

Leaving only short hours, minutes, for soft words and warm light, giggles and silly words.

Time.

To slow down. The luxury of stopping. Of looking up from the chores, from work, from appointments and errands and obligations.

To see their faces. Occupied. Without me.

Which has become the way.

And so I took them off.

Those mommy pants. Those shrouds of grocery lists and delayed vaccination schedules and kindergarten registration. They’ve begun to feel like shackles, an obvious simile. The truth of which I came to realize one sunshiney afternoon.

Because those pants? Were keeping me from being a mommy.

And so for that afternoon my mommy pants became super hero tights and a pirate’s wooden leg, a dinosaur’s roar and a black cat’s tail.

We jumped on the couch and ran down the hall. My movements no longer limited. And we all fell down, into a heap of blankets and pillows, pockets full of posies.

My mommy pants lay forgotten, crumpled on the floor.

Oh I love this – now I am going to have to check out The Mombshelter blog. Yes, why is it that becoming a Mommy makes you take on that mantel of responsibility which can then stop you from just simply being? Glad you got to take the mantel and the pants off :-)

Yes, run right over and check out The Mombshelter, she is stunningly beautiful and hella smart, also she mostly keeps her pants on (mainly because bikini waxes are outrageously priced these days, and they hurt. Alot.)

    Lovely.

We should all do that more often.

Set aside the cleaning and cooking and organizing…and take part instead in the laughing and the inventing and the discovering.

    We so should.

Wow. This really made me pause for a minute… great post.

Making people pause is what I live for! I also live for red wine, and maybe a little bit of money (just enough to get by) oh and poutine (google it, pause you will). Also my kids, actually my kids would be first, then making people pause tied with red wine, and I’m going to switch money for poutine because good poutine is hard to come by and then money. Ahh getting my life organized feels so good. Thank you.

Perfection – as always:) The Mombshell can do no wrong in my eyes (well, other than going back to work & leaving us all going through Mombshelter withdrawl!)

I must check out the Mombshell. So well written and such a good reminder (particularly as I deal with an out of control tantrumming 6 year old!) that we moms need to get down on the floor (or into a pocketful of poseis) with our kids and play for a little bit every day.

Tantrumming 6 year olds are sadly my speciality. Some specialize in gemstones, exotic fabrics, organic teas, mine sadly is tantrumming 6 year olds, and tantrumming 3 year olds, and tantrumming 20 month olds. I pretty much have cornered the market on tantrumming. Come over, misery loves company.

And here I thought I was wearing my super hero tights too often.

But really, there’s no too often for that, is there?

There is never too often when it comes to super hero tights. Unless there is chafing. If there is chafing then it might be too often. Which is pretty much my life’s philosophy. A mantra if you will.

I’ve never heard of MommyPants in such a poetic way before. Nor have I ever wanted to rip them off in such fury either. :)

    This is so lovely.
These moments with our children are truly fleeting…more super hero tight wearing is indeed required.
    I may even add a cape. ;)

Indeed it is. Also I love Nicoles with h’s. Nicoles with h’s seem so much more refined than Nicoles without. Which explains a lot about me, the lack of the h.

    Love it.

I definitely prefer the super hero tights (even though they make my ass look big) and the pirate’s wooden leg to mommy pants. I don’t get to wear either as much as I want to (what mommy can?) but it sure is the best feeling in the world when we can take them off for a little while.

Oh, this is great! I do think our Mommypants sometimes keep the kid inside of us constricted, since we are supposed to be mommies, after all.

But there’s so much more to it, isn’t there?!

I will have to go and check out your wonderful friend’s blog…
