Happy Blogaversary to me

It’s been four years.
That’s right, newbies. And when I say newbies, I mean all of you who get excited about celebrating your two-month-aversary or your 100th post. Even your year blogaversary is, you know, cute and all. Just like running a half-marathon is cute when you’re doing the full.
My first post was July 10th, 2006. Sage was not yet a year old. I started it because I wanted a virtual scrapbook of sorts. Something a little nicer than the Word docs I used to note milestones.
I’ve come a long way. I have. This is my 679th post. Who knew I had that much to say?
My blog evolved from short, disjointed entries to longer posts with lots of pictures. I chronicled potty-training Sawyer. Training for my first marathon. Funny things my kids said. Then I moved on to deeper, more revealing, more thoughtful posts. I still write about my family, but I like to think my experiences and observations are something my readers can relate to.
Then, this January? I discovered social media. Or rather, I figured I’d better use it if I ever wanted this blog to go anywhere. I went from 12 followers to 130. In the meantime, I hired someone to design a new blog. I renamed, rebranded, and moved to WordPress. Lost lots of followers, though I’m starting to get some of them back and am excited to have new ones, too.
Because this whole blogging thing boils down to the connections I’ve made with other bloggers over the years. Maybe I don’t have thousands of followers, but the ones I have? Are awesome. And I know you’re here because you genuinely like what I have to say.
We’ve had some great conversations, you and I, even when you haven’t always agreed with me. There were times when I just couldn’t cry anymore so instead poured my heartache onto these pages. And there you were, with a virtual hug and words that made me cry all over again – because they were so beautiful and profound and made me feel not so alone.
Your comments? Have made me snort water through my nose. They’ve made me think. They’ve made me feel understood, like you totally get me.
They’ve provided me with adult conversation when the entire day is spent haggling with those 6 and under.
This is a gift I’ve been given.
I get to do what I love, a big part of what makes me, me: I get to write. And though I would write regardless of whether anyone was reading, I want to thank you for joining me. You have made me feel accountable. I know you are out there, and that you WILL read, and I want to make sure I put in the effort. That I’m not just posting pictures of our trip to the zoo – I’m writing about trying to change a diaper by the gorilla exhibit, and they start throwing poo at us!
Not that that actually happened. But if it did? You’d be the first to know!
